When John Nelson founded NEI Electric Power Engineering in 1982, he had just left a successful career with Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy). Upon its founding, NEI’s initial projects included substation design, power system calculations, protective relay settings, as well as on-site services including troubleshooting, installation, testing, commissioning, and start-up. From 1982 until his retirement in 2014, Mr. Nelson developed an inspiring vision of customer service, technical expertise, and field-engineering competence.
This culture of service, intellectual curiosity, and problem solving is still embodied by our team today.
The field of electric power engineering has changed dramatically since our founding. Engineers can now model electrical and structural systems using state-of-the-art software instead of using hand calculations. Relays are programmed using computers and digital logic rather than induction disks and solenoids. This is not to mention the myriad code changes and institution of regulatory bodies such as NERC.
With the rapid and ongoing advancements in technology, NEI remains true to our roots by ensuring all engineers are field-tested and understand the concepts and theories upon which modern software is based. We firmly believe that our technical and conceptual knowledge and time in the field vastly improves the quality of data collected, which increases the relevance and usefulness of the results produced by the various software packages.
