Job Overview

The Controller is responsible for providing strategic and financial leadership and direction for the organization through collaboration with the Board of Directors, management, and project teams in establishing short-term and long-range goals, plans, and policies. Responsibilities include overseeing the production of all financial data and analysis utilized by the management, project teams, and Board of Directors in their decision-making capacities and ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely financial information. The Controller will favorably position NEI on behalf with respect to lending institutions and partnering entities, as well as foster an environment that promotes growth, innovation and process improvement throughout the organization.

Essential Responsibilities


  • Partners with the Board of Directors and Project Management Team regarding operational issues as they arise; provides strategic recommendations to optimize financial position based on financial analysis, projections and revenue/expense analysis
  • Demonstrates knowledge of engineering and consulting services, job cost, indirect rates, and compliance
  • Establishes credibility throughout the organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges
  • Direct partner with management and project teams in review of projects, job cost, revenue recognition, variance analysis, and client contract requirements
  • Evaluates the financial/accounting structure within NEI and plans for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the Accounting function
  • Provides opportunities and oversees the professional and personal development of direct reports, with emphasis on providing opportunities for professional advancement, when possible and appropriate
  • Optimizes banking relationships and initiates appropriate on-going strategies to enhance NEI’s cash position
  • Oversees the development and ongoing monitoring of budget tools that provide a basis for financial accountability for individuals throughout the organization
  • Identifies and oversees technology solution upgrades, manages timelines, and selects vendors and platforms
  • Provides direction for NEI’s Finance department through the creation of long-term and short-term strategic goals (e.g., reporting packages containing financial dashboards and benchmark comparisons), and continually monitors and assesses goal achievement

Financial Reporting

  • Develops and reviews financial budgets and forecasts
  • Oversees accounting operational process design, reporting efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls
  • Analyzes and interprets accounting information to assess corporate operating results in terms of performance against prior periods, forecasts and budgets
  • Ensures accounting adjustments are appropriately recorded and understands explanations for significant fluctuations from expected/forecasted results
  • Oversees the timely preparation of monthly Executive reporting packages in accordance with Corporate guidelines and U.S. GAAP
  • Develops and leads regular financial reporting updates with the Management team, presenting financial results and providing explanations for successes and failures, as well as suggested actions to improve performance
  • Oversees third-party audits when required and tax preparation ensuring they are performed within prescribed deadlines and with minimal operational impact through proactive planning and preparation initiative
  • Manages current corporate cash flow and forecasted cash position, present and explain significant projection inputs and methodology

Technical Responsibilities

  • Maintains a strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and industry specific laws, compliance requirements and regulations
  • Provides technical, financial advice and knowledge to Team Members
  • Oversees account reconciliations, revenue recognition, and job cost and related general ledger accounts
  • Identifies and enrolls in on-going continuing professional education (“CPE”) training classes, with a minimum expectation of 40 CPE hours in a calendar year, with 2 – 4 of those CPE hours coming from ethics courses

Skills & Knowledge

  • Possess a strong technical knowledge of the intricacies of professional services accounting issues
  • Thoroughly understands the relationships within the financial reports and statements issued by the accounting function
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills; ability to interact successfully at all levels of the organization; demonstrates high emotional intelligence
  • Professional, articulate, and able to exercise good independent judgement and discretion
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle, delegate, and prioritize multiple competing tasks and effectively manage deadlines
  • Demonstrates intermediate-to-advanced level skills with Microsoft Office products
  • Highly organized, motivated self-starter
  • Proven record of delivering a high standard of quality work with exceptional attention to detail
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and creating systems and plans where there are none
  • Flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced environment with a quickly growing team

Qualifications & Experience

  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting
  • CPA Preferred
  • 7 – 10 years of Accounting experience
  • Specific engineering and consulting service industry and/or related industry experience a plus
  • 7+ years of analysis and preparation of financial statements and operational financial reporting, including balance sheet, income statement, and management reporting
  • Must have a strong attention to detail
  • Must be able to work in the United States
  • Must have a positive, “can do” attitude

Minimal travel may be required (0%-10%)

Salary Range

$125,000 – $140,000
