Practical Application of IEC 61850 in U.S. Substations Compared to Traditional Relay Protection

Upcoming NEI Paper Presentation at the 2024 Rural Electric Power Conference (REPC)

We are excited to present a paper on the practical benefits of implementing IEC 61850 in a utility substation at the Rural Electric Power Conference (REPC), taking place from April 30 to May 2, 2024, in Tulsa, OK.

By reviewing a typical U.S. substation, the paper compares typical wiring versus 61850 concerning reduced construction time and materials, compressed commissioning schedules, and improved operations. The paper also highlights the benefits when considering the future expansion of a substation. Finally, specific use cases are identified where applying 61850 is an ideal choice, such as load shedding and breaker failure schemes. We understand that 61850 is one of the latest buzzwords and are presenting this paper to reduce confusion by providing a practical example and a comparison to typical protection and control designs.
